Almost every day we get emails asking for tips on what to do after installing Prey. So we figured, given that our software is usually installed on new devices, why not share a few other tips as well?
So here’s our list!

Laptops: Lessons I Learned When My Laptop Was Stolen (via @Lifehacker)
A month ago, developer Nikhil Kodilkar’s laptop was stolen. He had a few security measures in place, but he also learned a lot from the experience. Here are a few of his more important takeaways. Image by Florian Let’s go over a “What if” condition.
More on stolen laptops: Here are some step you can take to secure your data and, at best, recover your PC.
I noticed, however, that if you were to get an FED, then Prey of LoJack will be rendered useless if the PC shuts down, seeing as how the thief/thieves would not be able to access the computer to get them running.. Actually, I think I remember LoJack being installed in BIOS or something like that so, even if they cleaned your drive, you’d still be good.
Anyway, as it stands, I currently use LoJack, Prey and TrueCrypt. I think this is the better way to go. You just put your sensitive data in a TrueCrypt container and make it so the thief/thieves can login (Guest account), allowing the PC to be tracked.
Theft: How I Got My Stolen Laptop Back Within 24 Hours Using Prey (via @Lifehacker)
Last weekend, my briefcase was stolen out of our vehicle while it was parked outside of a Bed & Breakfast. In the bag was my MacBook and all of my documents for work.
I already have Absolute Software’s LoJack for Laptops installed on my PC, but I may just add this for extra security. I’m especially glad to see that it was the RCMP that helped out since it makes it more relevant to me, living in Canada and all.
Of course, you have to pay for LoJack. Prey, on the other hand, is free. :) Give it a whirl; you have nothing to lose.

Facebook Video Calling w/ the Power of Skype
Yesterday, Facebook announced that you can now make in-browser video calls to your contacts, all powered by Skype. I’m not sure if they’re gonna roll it out to every user just like that but, as far as I know it this is the only way to get started.
You click on the “Get Started” button, then Facebook will begin to teach you what to do, as well as initiate a download for setting up the video calling capability. It should take all of 30 seconds to a minute, really. Please note that for your friend to have the be able to video chat with you he/she will have to do the same.
Hit up the source link after the jump for more detailed instructions for those who need spoon-feeding and/or a more in-depth review. It’s only right that I link them since that’s where I found out where to go to enable the feature.
Program of the Week: Freemake Video Downloader
My first Program of the Week installment is Freemake Video Downloader. You’ll more than likely use this to download YouTube videos but it supports about 30 other sites and that’s not including 11 porn sites. That’s forty-two sites in total!!

How it works is you fire ‘er up, and you’ll get a window like this:
